We get one work day during the year where Admin is not allowed to make any demands on us. No kids, a quiet day in my classroom listening to music, submitting grades, and, of course, Oppo. End of Semester 1: the Halfway Point.

Very nice! I miss those days - this new school I’m working at has limited space so many rooms are shared by various teachers. All of our desks are in one large workroom.

That’s how it was at the high school I attended back in the Dark Ages.

I enjoy being in my classroom generally and this day each year is a treat.

Yea, we had the day with no students today but I had to leave the workroom and find a small nook elsewhere to get anything done.

Public school? Where, approximately?

Charter school, eh? What do you teach?

I interviewed at a charter school for an AP job once upon a time. The place was run by an MBA whose background was marketing. The teacher union in the district where I work in the San Francisco Bay Area has us conditioned to mistrust charters because less money and no protections. For my part, I am conditioned to mistrust anything my union says about anything.

I’m 8th grade (primarily) math, but I spent a dozen years at the high school and a year in administration.

Yea, I’ve worked for charters and public schools. I’m a special education teacher. This year I’m an inclusion teacher for 9th grade algebra, geometry and physics. That and I have my caseload for who I write IEPs and write progress reports (what I’ve been working on since Thursday).

The RSP teacher that I work with says an IEP takes her a full 40 hours to write. My wife is an instructional aide / para educator and she loves the teacher she works with and hates seeing the teacher constantly getting wrung out by unreasonable parents. Powerless people on power trips.

I’ll stick with math. I love my work and I love being with my 8th graders. I don’t miss ‘em any when I’m not at work, but I’m always happy enough to see them.

Yea, it takes a long time - I’m glad I have a full two weeks to write one. Usually that is moot when I have three IEP meetings in a week like I did two weeks ago.

And yes! Parents can be brutal sometimes. I do miss doing this work with middle schoolers though - when I worked in Los Angeles last year (where I’m from), I did not mind the parents at all because we worked a lot more like a team, and were willing to work like a team even when they were frustrated.
